“I am reading six books at once, the only way of reading; since, as you will agree, one book is only a single unaccompanied note, and to get the full sound, one needs ten others at the same time.” Virginia Woolf
I love the way you write about this and can't help but agree with you. The aim of 'reading a book a week' seems just another effect of an overstimulated society trying to gamify reading. Indeed, smelling a book and being in love with the simple pleasures of reading high-quality works itself is worth infinitely more than a boastful Goodreads score. Thanks for sharing.
We- the readers, the romantics, the quaint, the daring ones, the outmoded, the rebellious, the believers will continue to water the fragile stems of our love for the books until we become a forest.🫶
Thank you for this article - a reminder, written in such a beautiful way!😊🤍
this is a very much needed topic to be talked🫶.and I am happy for myself that i am unlearning the pressure of completing a book as fast as I can. I am currently savoring my current read as it should be done.
That is wonderful 🤎 im really happy you are giving yourself the opportunity of doing a slow reading 🤎✨ some books require more time and love, and that is part of the ritual✨
This is a comforting reminder <3 I definitely have felt more pressure in recent years to fulfill a reading quota given that I feel that I am falling short with my reading when I hear other readers completing far more books. I think its good to push yourself to a degree (I fall into reading slumps often) but I don't think we should necessarily be rushing to finish books the way we often are in this pressure of the modern day to fulfill a yearly reading challenge. I have set my yearly reading challenge for 50 books and feel like I am falling short because I am 3 books behind. But really I just need to find the right books.
I think it is something very modern to push us to meet numbers, not so much for the quality or pleasure of reading, just numbers. But yes, putting some pressure is good, not to complete a number of books but to educate ourselves, yes. Reading quality books, reading and learning always, is a good and necessary motivation. The right books are subjective to a certain point, I could tell you that the right ones are always in the classics, or the books of antiquity, but of course there are wonderful contemporary and modern ones. Just never read something because it is a bestseller, or because everyone on social networks does it, especially teenagers, who to be honest, are generally just creating a critical sense.
This was so beautiful, lovely Mariana! 🙏🏻💗 i so agree! There is nothing much better than being lost in a beautiful book and becoming more oneself in the process 🥹🙏🏻😘
Unfortunately the idea of a quota of books to read is nothing new. I remember back when I was seven the local public library sponsored a contest for kids over the summer. The aim was to see how many books a child would read during that time. I don’t remember anything about quality. This was during the ‘50s.
I know at the time I already enjoyed reading but I imagine it could encourage kids providing it didn’t emphasize speed. When that factors in actual learning is minimal. It becomes a race for the prize.

Thank YOU for this comment✨ and about smelling the book, seems like these young readers are even skiping that part! 💔

That is really interesting indeed, maybe doing that with children could help them to increase the desire to read? Because it can be taken as a game🤔

Quite difficult to say, what I'm sure about is that kids need to be educated as readers at home, and for that we as adults must be conscious readers
Fortunately my folks encouraged me to learn. My Dad even went into debt to buy me a set of encyclopedias.
What a wonderful piece of writing it is please do write more
I always crave for a good piece of writing ✍️
