I've read a couple of James Baldwin's novels, but have yet to explore his essays. His writing is beautiful.

I recently bought and just started reading Ways of Seeing by John Berger. Highly recommend, especially as someone who hasn't read much non fiction or any essay collections before now.

A book I consider crucial for anyone to read is the Confessions of Saint Augustine due to its historical significance as the first autobiography in the western world but also due to the deeply moving account of Augustine’s life.
